How do you bounce back after being on the low for a long time? After one super stressful month that I couldn’t function at all, today I’m showing you what I learned on getting back on track with life quicker.
Long story short, after a few weeks of sickness straight from my little one’s day-care, many fevers and antibiotics later left me with a major ear infection. And what’s the big deal, you ask?
I completely lost my hearing sense and the only thing I had was an extremely foggy mind and a consistent noise in my head all day everyday.
My creative side went out the window, I couldn’t use my brain for anything and the levels of guilt were skyrocketing. What I did to overcome this madness?
Let’s see!
Getting Back On Track With Life In 5 Easy Steps
Tip no1: Talk to yourself with kindness
Ok, I know this one is hard and I’m guilty for self-criticizing -a lot. But it’s also the most important when you’re trying to get back on track with your life.
And believe me, I’ve done a LOT of work to be able to notice my negative thoughts. I used to always beat myself up -but not anymore.
Talking kindly to you when you have many things that don’t go as planned is a must. In fact, showing compassion is the only thing that can get you out of any challenging situation. Whether it is work related, health, loss etc.
Let me give you a quick example. This month was extremely difficult for me (like I said in the beginning) both mentally and physically.
The first few days I was thinking like “You are lazy and you should get up and work, exercise etc” when I literally had high fever. You don’t need this in your life.
When I’m aware of these thoughts, I talk to myself like I would to my best friend. “You are doing everything you can.” “You just need time to recover and get back up” “You will be fine if you relax and take care of you”.
Guess what happened. I removed a “heavy weight” from my shoulders and completely understood that I just needed time to find myself again. And I did.
So next time you are in a tough situation, try giving yourself a “pat on the back” and be patient with your flow.
Who needs a negative inner voice? No-one!
Tip no2: Force yourself to exercise
My second and most important tip is exercise. And yes, I mean it even when you are in the middle of sickness. No excuses here, been there done that.
I’m not talking about an actual workout session of course but even a 5-minute walk outside will impact the way you’re seeing life positively.
I grew up hearing everyone in my family saying “Sit on the couch, eat and rest”. Anytime you wanted to get out the door and be active in any way the only thing you heard was something like “Just stay in! Why bother walking?”.
I had to grow up to do my own thing & learn that working out, walking or getting fresh air outside are equally important for being healthy in all aspects.
Anytime I feel that I can’t get up from my bed -or couch- due to being sick or completely exhausted mentally -moms get me?- I remind myself the benefits and just do it.
If you are able to do a workout do it and if you’re not, then get out for a bit. You’ll return much much better. I promise.
Getting back on track with life starts from you body & mind. You can’t neglect either. Go go go!
Tip no3: Catch up with people
I can’t stress this enough but people are the solution to any problem you are facing.
People can help you feel your best and show you that sometimes living in your own thoughts and feeling hopeless isn’t the reality. They are just thoughts and you can overcome this.
It’s in our nature to love being surrounded by people we love and having healthy relationships in general.
So when the times are tough, don’t disappear. Call a friend, talk to your family or go out for a walk -or a burger- with someone that makes you feel good.
On the other hand, if you don’t have people like this in your family, friends etc my best tip is to take part to a seminar or any other activity includes a group of people with a same interest as you.
Currently, I’m taking part to a few super helpful classes about positive parenting. And I must say that I met lovely people and had some great real conversations about something I’m passionate about. This helped me a lot during this difficult time.
Try it with something you love and stay connected!
Tip no4: Do something you wanted for a long time
Not feeling like yourself for a while is hard, I know.
And that brings us to my 4th tip on the road to returning to your best form ever. Doing something you wanted for a long time but never started is an underestimated idea that works.
Usually, you’re too busy creating -if you are on the creative side of things work wise- parenting, working, taking care of things around the house & family and the list goes on. So you neglect you and all the stuff that calm your mind and give you energy.
When you feel down it’s the perfect time to do things that boost your energy and make your brain stop and rest.
A course, a skill that you wanted to have, pilates, pottery lessons or anything that gets you excited. If not now, when?
Tip no5: Dress up
I’m sure you know these days that you are so sick that a trip to the bathroom for a shower seems like a marathon and your little one is hanging on your leg, right?
Well, I have news for you -and for me too! You should take yourself to the bathroom and do even the minimum self-care like brushing your teeth and / or do a minimal skincare routine.
If you have a bit more energy apply just a little makeup; brows, bronzer and a lip balm. It works like a charm.
To top it all off, don’t forget to get out of your pj’s! Through on your favorite pair of comfortable jeans, a cosy sweat and brush your hair. Something that seems so simple impacts your mood so so much, are you with me?
You’ll see a major difference by dressing up even if you don’t want it. This always helps me feel better sooner and see light at the end of the tunnel. It gives you a feeling of readiness and I love it.
You can handle anything with a little pampering, don’t you?
To Sum Up
Getting back on track with life seems so hard at times but I’m always reminding myself to take a small step at a time.
One day you cheer yourself up, the next you’re doing something you love and after a much needed “break” you magically feel great again.
It’s not easy but it’s certainly possible with these actionable tips.
