Although I’m definitely more of a nude lipstick kind of girl, I must admit that red lipsticks and their mood boosting effects are unbeatable. The power you feel when you have a red lipstick on is something magical, isn’t it? Like, give me anything and I’ll do it energy.
And because I tend to wear them more on special occasions like parties, during Christmas and Holiday season or for nights out, I want them to perform 100%. When it comes to red lipstick formulas I prefer them completely matte, long-wearing and ready to be on my lips -looking impeccable- for hours.
Who has time for red glosses or moisturizing formulas that are messy and will end up on your teeth? Nop. Thank you. Next.

Best Matte Red Lipsticks 2023
Sephora / Cream Lip Stain Shade 17 Dark Red
Sephora’s cream lip stain is hands down one of the best matte formulas you’ll come across. The applicator is small and easy to use, making the whole experience super enjoyable.
They are super matte, velvety, packed with color and non-drying. Although they have many matte red lipstick shades, on top of my list is the shade 17 Dark Red; a beautiful darker red -but not too dark- that looks stunning on without being “in your face”.
It’s a no-thinking shade, as it looks chic with everything and it’s my number one choice when I’m in a hurry. You can eat (avoiding oily foods of course), drink and dance with it all night long. It will stay on for sure.
I’m wearing it with my Endless Cacao pencil for a perfected look and I always make sure I have moisturized lips beforehand.
Nars / Powermatte Lipstick In Notorious
The Powermatte Lipstick formula by Nars is their newest addition and all I can say is that they are lovely.
They are completely matte, super opaque and feel great on the lips. Something to keep in mind is that when you have a lot of lip balm underneath they don’t last as long. So always blot whatever you have on your lips before applying them.
The shade Notorious is one of those matte reds that looks amazing even without makeup. Literally the best matte red lipstick with warm undertones that still looks good on my fair skin that has cooler tones. A “muted” red orange that’s not too orange and again not “in your face” which I dislike in red lipsticks.
You can wear it with minimal makeup like mascara, tinted moisturizer & bronzer and you are good to go. Love it!
Nars / Powermatte Lipstick In Highway To Hell
I love the Powermatte formula so much concerning the bolder shades that on my best matte red lipsticks of 2023 list I’ve included another shade as well.
Highway To Hell is definitely a dark red. A cool dark berry red that looks like you’ve just come out of a Vampire movie. But it’s awesome. Dark reds like this one are a must for me when I’m going out, as I find them way sexier & cooler than mainstream classic reds.
Their vibe is something else, isn’t it? I’m wearing it with a bit of gold glitter on the eyes, a total black outfit or even better with a red dress for a major stylish contrast.
You can’t go wrong!
Pat Mc GRATH Labs / MatteTrance Lipstick In The Shade Vendetta
Ok now, this lipstick from Pat Mc GRATH Labs is in this list because it looks matte but it isn’t exactly.
Let me explain it for a bit; it is not your usual matte as it has a creamy texture that glides on easily and feels very comfortable on the lips yet looks matte. I absolutely love the deep dark & super saturated red color and the way it makes the lips appear “expensive” if you can say something like that.
It is like jewel for your lips, perfect when you *definitely* want to make an entrance. Considering the creamy formula and the bold color of Vendetta, you have to make sure you have enough time for the seamless application.
It’s not the easiest but worth it once you have it on. Finally, also have in mind that this is a lipstick -only- for drinks and having fun. It’s not for eating as it will come off easier than the rest on this list.
Fenty Beauty / Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Color In Uncensored
I don’t have it with me right now so this is why it isn’t in the pictures, but if you want a bright universally flattering and long wearing matte red lipstick, Uncensored from Fenty is the answer.
It has a super runny, thin texture that applies easily due to its uniquely shaped applicator and dries down to a super comfortable matte lipstick that stays on no matter what.
It’s more of a true red -not too warm nor too cool- that can’t go un-noticed from far away. So if you love a statement brighter lip then this is the way to go. Have in mind that it is brighter than all my other recommendations on this post and a classic red shade.
